Burcon NutraScience Corp Reveals Breakthrough in Sunflower Protein Development

Burcon NutraScience Corp (TSX:BU, NASDAQ:BRCN) announced that it has developed a cost-effective and scalable process to extract high-purity protein ingredients from sunflower seeds for use in food and beverages.

The food and beverage plant-based protein developer said its Sunflower Protein Isolate sets a new benchmark for the next generation of high-quality, own-brand plant-based protein ingredients.

“A clean-brand, plant-based protein source that delivers great taste and texture is exactly what food and beverage formulators are looking for,” Kappel added.

Burcon noted that by leveraging its technology platform and commodity protein expertise, it has developed a proprietary extraction and purification process to convert sunflower meal, a by-product of production of sunflower oil, in high quality neutral-tasting sunflower protein isolates. and off-white color.

He added that these unique properties make them ideal for use in a variety of valuable food applications, especially those with delicate flavors.

Additionally, the company said it is working with Pristine Gourmet, a processor of 100% pure Canadian non-genetically modified organism (GMO) cold-pressed virgin oils, to further optimize Sunflower’s new sunflower protein technology. Burcon.

The parties are working together in a previously announced C$1 million project that included co-investment from Protein Industries Canada, according to the company.

Additionally, Burcon said it intends to develop ideal food and beverage applications for its unique sunflower protein isolate while establishing a market for this new class of plant-based protein ingredients.
